Air vs Sea freight from China to East Malaysia — real numbers

Every fashion shop owner in Sarawak asks the same question: should I ship by air or by sea? The honest answer: for regular restocking, sea consolidation wins by a wide margin — and the maths below uses our actual published rates, not vague claims.

Speed: air wins, clearly

• Air express: 5–7 days, delivery to door.
• Sea consolidation: 18–26 days to Sarawak, counted from container closing.

If a hot item is selling out today and every day of stockout costs you sales, air can be worth it. For planned restocking, two to three weeks of patience saves you several times the freight.

Cost: sea wins, massively — here is the maths

Take one real product: a women's dress that compresses to 0.0022 CBM and weighs 0.445 kg with packaging. Fill a full 1 CBM with roughly 450 pieces and compare the two channels:

Ten times the cost for the same box of clothes. That is why we say: sea for business, air for emergencies.

When air still makes sense

• Emergency top-ups of a bestseller that is selling out — the stockout costs more than the freight.
• Small, light, high-margin items (a few kg of accessories) where the absolute air cost stays low.
• Sample runs before committing to a bulk sea order.

When sea is the only sensible choice

• Regular restocking — the backbone of a wholesale business.
• Bulky-but-light goods — dresses, kidswear, soft accessories: exactly the category where air's volumetric weight punishes you hardest.
• Any order where the deadline has slack — 18–26 days planned into your buying cycle is free money.

One more lever: share the container

Sea freight is charged per CBM of compressed volume. If your order is smaller than 1 CBM, you still pay the below-1-CBM tier — pooling your goods with other customers' shipments into one full container drops everyone's rate. That is what our weekly consolidation does automatically.
